OUR TRAINING METHOD
The training provided is competency-based, requiring students to attain the necessary level of skill proficiency to become certified makeup artists.
TEACHING FACILITIES & KITS
Our facilities offer a professional, creative space where artistic expression flourishes.
Student kits feature top-quality, industry standard makeup brands, both local and international, customized to our specifications.
We provide the latest products and tools, incorporating a variety of brands to ensure versatility and limitless creativity. Quality over quantity is our focus.
THEORY
Before applying makeup, it’s essential to understand the theory behind it. This forms the foundation for becoming a world-class makeup artist. The course begins with comprehensive theory lectures, where educators cover the fundamentals of makeup. Engaging discussions and Q&A sessions ensure that every student fully grasps each aspect of the curriculum. Students are provided with a complete manual and will build a portfolio of evidence throughout the course. Additionally, they are required to complete theory exams and tests to assess their understanding of the material.
PRACTICAL
At the start of each class, course educators demonstrate essential skills and techniques. Students are encouraged to take notes as educators share their industry expertise, including valuable "behind the scenes" tips and tricks. During practical exercises, students practice the demonstrated techniques, with educators closely monitoring each step, providing personalized advice and guidance.
Students work with a variety of skin tones and facial features, gaining a solid understanding of the diverse clientele they may serve. During practical sessions, students apply makeup on each other, gaining insight into the client experience. Classmates provide feedback on aspects such as pressure and overall experience, helping educators assess practical application.
COURSE ASSESSMENT
Course requirements include attending the necessary number of classes and completing all assessments. Practical assessments are conducted through direct observation by an assessor, where students demonstrate their skills in real-time. For these assessments, students are responsible for providing their own models.
Additional evaluations are carried out through written tests, including multiple-choice questions, as well as assignments.
Students must also complete various industry-relevant tasks, such as practical case studies, research, and design projects. These assignments are graded and contribute to meeting course requirements. To earn a qualification, students must demonstrate competency in both practical and theoretical assessments.
COURSE ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
On the first day of the course, students receive an induction booklet outlining the academy's rules and regulations, including attendance requirements.
Each course has a minimum number of guided learning hours that must be completed in order to qualify for certification. Any missed class hours must be made up to meet this requirement.
Students are expected to bring their makeup kits, manuals, and files to class each day. Those who arrive unprepared may be dismissed from class.
LANGUAGE, LITERACY & NUMERACY
Kohl Academy® recognizes that some students may encounter barriers to education and training. We are committed to providing guidance and support where reasonably possible, helping students address challenges related to their individual needs. It is important that students note any special requirements or learning difficulties on their application form.
Additionally, students must disclose in writing any illness, disability, or learning difficulty that could impact their performance during the course. This information is kept confidential and will only be shared with the appropriate personnel.
ARTISTIC PHOTO SHOOT DAYS
Photoshoot days are scheduled throughout the course with a professional photographer as part of the training program. These sessions help students build their portfolios while learning key skills such as working with a team, navigating a set, understanding how makeup appears on camera, selecting models, choosing appropriate hairstyles and styling, conceptualising and executing ideas, and creating and presenting mood boards.
MODELS
Occasionally, students are required to bring a model or client to class for practical observation, including on photoshoot days. On the first day of the course, students will receive a day planner outlining all dates when models or clients are needed, providing them with ample time to arrange for them. At the beginning of the course, the academy will discuss model selection for photoshoots and provide guidance on sourcing models.
AFTERCARE
Master classes and workshops are scheduled where previous students are invited to up-skill and keep informed. It’s important that our artists stay on top of their game.
ARTIST EVENTS
Over and above master classes and workshops Kohl Academy® was the first institution to bring a celebrity makeup artist to South Africa to present workshops to makeup artists and the public. Kohl Academy® brought celebrity makeup artist and author of 6 makeup books, Rae Morris, to South Africa in April 2013. Rae now endorses Kohl Academy®. Donna Mee, one of the world’s top makeup educators visited Kohl in July 2014, presenting master classes. In 2015 Kohl hosted Emmy Award Winning artist Kevin James Bennett, where he taught artists his tricks that awarded him an Emmy win for best makeup. In 2018 Einat Dan visited Kohl Academy® and presented master classes in fashion editorial makeup. To become a world-class artist you need to have world-class training.

Makeup artists play a vital role across various visual platforms, working with TV hosts, presenters, news anchors, documentary filmmakers, variety and talk shows, soap opera stars, singers, dancers, actors, and stage performers. Their work extends to films and TV shows, where makeup is applied not only to main characters but also to the many extras often overlooked.
Corporate clients constitute a significant portion of the industry, hiring artists for advertising campaigns, product launches, company brochures, billboards, posters, calendars, catalogs, expos, and internal team shoots for newsletters and promotional materials.
Magazines and print media provide makeup artists with a continuous stream of work, capturing images for brands as well as fashion editorials and in-depth articles.
The music, TV, and film industries produce hundreds of new shows, movies, and music videos daily, all of which require the expertise of a makeup artist before filming can begin.
Many makeup artists begin their careers at cosmetic counters, eventually becoming senior artists for international brands and traveling the world while working with high-profile clients.
Private clients also seek out makeup artists for various events, including weddings, proms, special occasions, and themed parties. Makeup artistry is an essential aspect of our world and one of the fastest-growing industries.
